Overview

The Department of Tourism Studies aims to graduate students with a sufficient level of knowledge and skills required for the tourism labor market, qualifying them for work in various departments of tourism companies, airlines, and airports. They can also be employed in general positions that suit their skills, such as public relations, marketing, and customer service. 

 

The department Is committed to ensuring that graduates acquire the ability to interact with modern developments in the tourism industry and acquire self-learning skills that enable them to keep pace with new developments. Furthermore, it is committed to promoting behavioral values and professional ethics. 

 

The department meets the needs of the tourism and hotel sector by offering numerous career opportunities through theoretical and practical courses offered to students throughout their years of study. It also contributes effectively to serving the community by offering targeted programs, developing and enhancing human resources, and preparing studies and research In the field of tourism and presenting them to interested parties and decision-makers.

To enable students to achieve excellence in the tourism field by providing distinguished educational, research, and training services to students, preparing them to compete in the job market. Furthermore, it contributes effectively to academic and cognitive development by supervising students to continue their postgraduate studies, and contributing to the fulfillment of the college and university's mission within the framework of the ethical charter and societal values. 

 


 

Undergraduates

Education system

  • The period of study for obtaining a bachelor's degree in four years (the two-semester system) and specialization in the scholastic divisions will be per what is indicated in the study schedules stipulated.
  • The faulty Council, based on the presentation of the departmental councils, determines the training system for the faculty students according to what is shown in the study plan tables and it is implemented under the supervision of the teaching staff and within the available capabilities. Training is considered a success and failure subject without adding its degree to the total grades. It counts as a one-semester subject.
  • Transfer exams and bachelor's exams are held at the end of each semester of the courses the student has studied in the academic year. In addition to the postponed courses of the previous year. To enter the exams scheduled, the student must have completed an attendance rate of no less than 75%. 
  • The Faculty Council, based on the request of the councils of the relevant departments, may issue a decision to forbid the student from applying for the exam in the courses in which he did not meet the attendance rate. In this case, the student is considered to fail in these courses except if he offers an acceptable excuse to the Faculty Council. In this case, he/she is considered absent with an excuse.
  • Students of the fourth year prepare a project during the school year and allocate an additional period for discussion after the written examination determined by the faculty council, which is based on the proposal of the relevant department council. Hence, it does not exceed three weeks, and the student who fails the project subject is left to repeat.
  • The councils of the specialized departments determine the annual field scientific visits plan and the faculty council approves it.
  • All subjects in all the academic years end with a final exam in the semester in which they are taught
  • The study continues for one semester for fifteen weeks.

Grades percentages:
•    Excellent: 85% or more.
•    Very good: from 75% to less than 85.
•    Good: from 65% to less than 75%.
•    Fair: from 50% to less than 65%.

As for the failure of the student, it is estimated with one of the following two grades:
•    Poor: from 30% to less than 50%.
•    Very poor: 30%.
 

Postgraduates

Master's Degree (MA):
•    Applicants must obtain B.Sc. in the intended major, with a general minimum grade of "GOOD" from the Faculty of Tourism & Hotels Management, an equivalent degree from another academic institute accredited by the university, or a postgraduate diploma from the Faculty of Tourism and Hotels Management with a general minimum grade of "GOOD".
•    Applications must be submitted on the annual fixed period and offered to the department (major) for assessment, then up to the Faculty Board for final decision. Applications are valid as of the faculty's approval.
•    Upon their employers' agreement, applicants must be free to study for at least 2 days a week. 

MA Regulations:
•    The duration of the study is no less than two years.
•    Applicants must pass at least 24 units of the postgraduate courses assigned by the major Department's Board, of which 25% must be external-related subjects approved by both the major Department's Board and the Faculty Board upon a recommendation by the Supervisor as illustrated in the MA & Ph.D. course list. Methods of Research courses and seminars are complementary regulations.
•    Applicants must prepare a minimum 2-year/maximum 4-year thesis approved by both the Departments Board (major) and the faculty Board that will be valid upon the faculty Board's approval. Registration can be extended for a maximum 2-year period upon the Supervisor's recommendation and endorsement by the Department (major) Board.
•    A seminar must be held where a thesis must be conducted by the applicant and approved by the Panel of Examiners.

Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.):
Registration for Ph.D:
•    The applicant must obtain an MA Degree in the specialization/major from any of the Faculties of Tourism & Hotel Management or an equivalent degree from another academic institute accredited by the University. Applicant's MA degree grade must be no less than "VERY GOOD".
•    Applications must be submitted on the annual fixed period and offered to the department (major) for assessment, then up to the faculty Board for final decision.

Regulations of Ph.D.
•    Upon the Faculty Board's approval, the required period to obtain a Ph.D. in any of the tourism studies, hotel management studies, or tour guide is a minimum of two years and/or a maximum of five years.
•    Applicants must pass at least 32 units - with a minimum grade of "VERY GOOD" - of the postgraduate courses as illustrated in the Ph. D. course list, of which 25% must be external-related subjects, assigned by the faculty Board upon approval of the major of the Department Board.
•    An innovative dissertation must be conducted by the applicant and then accredited by the Faculty Board upon recommendation and approval of the major of the Department Board. The required period for this is a minimum of two years and a maximum of five years upon accreditation of the faculty Board, which is liable to extend the registration period for an extra two years maximum, based on a report by the supervisor and approval of the major of the Department Board.
•    Debated in a seminar the Dissertation must be approved and accredited by a Panel of academic examiners.
